Caution when buying a used vehicle:
A lot of used cars for sale on the Irish market where previously written off in the UK or Ireland. A significant amount of these vehicles have been involved in accidents where an insurance claim is not made and as a result these vehicles are not picked up on by the online history car checks and the potential buyer would not be aware. Many vehicles which have been written off under an insurance claim are repaired and put for sale before the online history vehicle check providers have been notified.
Vehicles are also for sale with issues that are not fully apparent to the untrained eye and ear and not part of an NCT/ CVRT test such as performance of engine and gearbox’s, noises from engine and gearbox components, clutch or turbo issues, interior rattles, wind noise, water ingress. So a vehicle with a fresh or lengthy test is not a guarantee that no costly issues exist.
90% of all vehicle inspections we carry out have issues of some sort that will need attention immediately or within a few short weeks. Simple issues ranging from tyres and brakes to more serious such as timing chains, clutches, turbos, injectors. Issues noted only from underneath of the vehicle include under body rust, suspension components, engine oil leaks, floor damage, exhaust rust, gearbox and driveshaft oil seals. All can be flagged during an inspection.
A single issue with a car can cost 200 to 5000 euro in repairs. We find that sales cars up to five year old need on average 500 euro to be spent and cars five to ten yr old on average need approx 1000 euro. Over ten yr old need on average 1000 to 2000 euro in repairs.
We can offer non binding verbal estimates of the costs of repairs which the buyer can negotiate off the selling price if proceeding.
